Target is Stepping Up for Communities Before, During and After Natural Disasters

When our teammates and neighbors need us most — Team Target is committed to helping. Our Corporate Command Center (C3) in Minneapolis proactively keeps an eye on severe weather that will impact our communities across the country. In the heat of the moment our supply chain networks route essentials where they’re needed, and after Team Target is there to care for each other and our communities — every step of the way.

Innovating our impact

One of our newest ways to help communities when disaster strikes comes from team member insight in areas previously affected by power outages after hurricanes. After storms guests have come to Target to find a sense of normalcy, escape the heat and charge devices — often using every outlet in the store.

We listened to our store teams impacted by hurricanes and learned something powerful: during natural disasters, our stores are more than retail spaces — they’re community hubs.

To meet that need we’ve created mobile charging stations for our team and guests to use. Housed in our Mobile, Alabama store — central to all our locations impacted by hurricane season — these stations can be deployed within a day, ready to make a difference before storms even make landfall.

These mobile charging stations will join pallets of essential supplies being delivered as communities prepare for a hurricane:

  • Weeks before landfall: C3 and our field partners track the path of the storm and rapidly adjust our logistics network ensuring essential supplies move through our supply chain network quickly.
  • Five days before landfall: Pallets of essential supplies like food, water and batteries are delivered to stores.
  • 2 days before landfall: Mobile generators, charging stations and power towers are transported to a supply chain facility within the impacted area to be ready if stores need them.
  • After landfall: C3 and field leaders determine where to distribute mobile charging stations and power towers to best serve team and community needs.

Our three larger care site units can be either solar powered or plugged into existing outlets and power 40-50 outlets at a time, while our power towers turn one useable outlet into eight plus eight additional USB charging ports so that when our communities need to charge medical devices, phones, laptops and more they can do so easily.

“Each year in Miami, we prepare for hurricane season the best way we know how,” says Joe G., district senior director D-349. “With support from teams across Target we can prepare with the confidence that we’ll be able to meet the needs of our communities.”

Every step of the way, we're learning and innovating to be an even greater help next time our neighbors need us. By preparing our stores, supply chains and team members we’re able to be the community hubs they need to help get quickly back onto their feet and begin to recover after disaster.

Proactive partnerships make a bigger impact

When it comes to helping our communities in crisis, we believe strong partnerships make a big impact. Partnering with organizations like Center for Disaster Philanthropy, Convoy of Hope, American Red Cross, Team Rubicon, SBP, Footprint Project and Feeding America gives Target’s disaster relief efforts a strong foundation to help communities, making sure these organizations can respond quickly when disaster strikes.

Starting in 2025 we’ve evolved some of our partnerships to make our impact wider, deeper and longer lasting in the communities we serve. We’ve strengthened our ties to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, which helps determine where donations to local non-profit organizations will be most impactful and Convoy of Hope, which delivers food and relief supplies — including donations from Target — to areas impacted by disaster.

In 2025, Target donated $1.5 million in advance across multiple non-profit organizations to support disaster response funds like the American Red Cross’ Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP) — enabling the organization to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small, whenever and wherever they occur across the U.S. We’re also investing in long-term recovery projects in areas affected by Hurricane Helene through a $3 million commitment in 2024, helping non-profit programs like SBP’s Disaster Assistance program which guided survivors through the FEMA application and appeals process unlocking more funding for those families to recover and rebuild.

Supporting our teams in times of need

And when our team members need an extra hand after a natural disaster, we’re ready. The Team Member Giving Fund provides peace of mind through targeted assistance that helps recipients breathe easier.

  • When Hannah R., food service team leader, Asheville, North Carolina, lost cell signal, electricity and water for several weeks after Hurricane Helene, Target’s Team Member Giving Fund helped her family pay essential bills.
  • When Gail S., guest advocate, St. Petersburg, Florida, lost some of her possessions to Hurricane Helene — Target's team member giving fund helped her replace the essentials so she could rest easy.

“We recovered quite well,” says Brant J., training specialist, Lake City, Florida, “A large part of that was the assistance that the Team Member Giving Fund provided for my family. We all need help from time to time and it’s important that our team feels extremely comfortable to seek that help.”
